If you react negatively to the situations outside of your control, you’ll never be able to deal with the challenges of life. In fact, that’s why so many people are struggling with anxiety, depression and unhappiness.

Yes, life is hard. And we all struggle with it.

But don’t let that be the source of your unhappiness.

If you can learn to manage the way you react to external circumstances, you’ll vastly improve the quality of your life.

We live in a materialistic world.

There seems to be a magical cure, ‘guru’ or quick fix for everything. But the truth is, external influences can’t genuinely help us achieve a deep level of happiness.

Instead, we have to look within. We have to find peace within our minds first if we want to be genuinely happy. And that’s down to us - no pill, therapy or coach can do that for us.

We have tools to find peace - meditation, mantras, exercise - but these are just ways to support us in our search for meaning. It’s down to us to put in the effort, time and energy into finding out what we really want from this life.

And just a tiny change in our physiology can completely transform the way we feel - like a gentle smile.

I remember reading a Tony Robbins book that suggested if you want to improve the quality of your life, just practice smiling 5 times in the mirror per day.

Whilst you might feel ridiculous, it will change the way you feel!

The beauty of a smile is that you can carry it with you everywhere. And it’s something we can all do. So enjoy it!

Thich Nhat Hanh is one of my favourite teachers on mindfulness.

His philosophies on life have totally changed my perspectives, and this powerful mantra peace is one of my particular favourites.

Because quite often, we’re too focused on achieving our goals to really enjoy the present moment.

Every breath we take, every step we make, can be filled with peace, joy and serenity.

But if you can’t enjoy the journey, you’re missing out on a huge part of the joy of life.

If you can do that, you’ll be well on your well to gaining a deep sense of inner peace.

I like to think of our problems as landmarks of progress.

Little things seem nothing, but they give peace, like those meadow flowers which individually seem odorless but all together perfume the air.

Well let’s look at a tiny species, like ants.

They weight a mere 1-5mg each.

But if you combined the weight of all the ants in the world, they’d weigh as much or more than all the human beings in the world.

Whilst these things seem small, collectively they’re massive. And they shape the world we live in today.

The world is a beautiful place, but we have to be careful that we don’t surround ourselves in toxic environments.

That’s why I like this mantra for peace:

It reminds you to judge your environment by how you feel. If you don’t feel good, safe or comfortable about the place you’re in, the people you surround yourself or where you spend most of your time, change it.

You should feel beautiful and you should feel safe. What you surround yourself with should bring you peace of mind and peace of spirit

Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures.

For example, some people make the mistake of changing too much around their lifestyle.

They go from living a life of no spirituality to suddenly meditating, eating vegetarian, yoga, and practicing mantras etc. 

But if you try to make too many changes at once, you’ll burn out.

So instead, focus on small, continuous practices that improve the quality of your life on a consistent basis - daily, monthly and weekly.
